The Story
The Texas Rangers defeated the Toronto Blue Jays 4-2 at Globe Life Field on June 17, 2023, with the DiamondIQ model's estimate moving from a 61% pre-game home win probability to a certainty by the final out. Texas built its advantage early and added an insurance run late, while Toronto managed only isolated damage against a Rangers pitching staff that held firm through nine innings.
The decisive stretch came in the bottom of the second, when Josh Jung launched a home run off Trevor Richards that added 12.2% to Texas's win probability, followed moments later by a Jonah Heim home run off Richards that contributed another 6.7%. Those two swings off the same pitcher gave the Rangers a 3-1 cushion and effectively set the tone for the evening. Toronto briefly threatened to make it a game in the top of the fourth, when Daulton Varsho hit a solo home run off Dane Dunning that swung win probability 10.2% in the Blue Jays' favor, cutting the deficit to 3-2. The Rangers answered in the bottom of the seventh, however, when Corey Seager hit a home run off Yimi García — the single biggest swing of the game at plus 13.1% — to push the lead back to two and extinguish any remaining Toronto momentum.
Seager finished as the game's top offensive performer by WPA at plus 14.1% with a RE24 of plus 1.0, while Jung and Varsho were the other standouts, posting WPA figures of plus 10.3% and plus 10.8% respectively. On the mound, Josh Sborz led all pitchers with a WPA of plus 16.6%, with Bowden Francis close behind at plus 15.8%, and Dane Dunning contributing plus 8.3% despite surrendering the Varsho home run. Toronto finished with nine hits but could not cluster them effectively, leaving the Rangers with a clean victory.
