The Story
The Los Angeles Angels defeated the Miami Marlins 4-3 on August 7, 2026, at loanDepot park, overcoming a game in which the DiamondIQ model's estimate opened with Miami holding a 65 percent pre-game win probability. The Angels trailed through six innings before a decisive seventh-inning rally erased that advantage entirely. Nolan Schanuel delivered the knockout blow in the top of the seventh, connecting for a home run off Josh Ekness that swung win probability 30.1 percent in the Angels' favor. That same inning, a fielding error charged to Ekness on a Mike Trout plate appearance added another 13.5 percent swing, allowing the Angels to push across three total runs in the frame and take a lead they would not relinquish.
Miami made a late push in the bottom of the ninth when Javier Sanoja laced a double off José Fermin that shifted win probability 27.0 percent toward the Marlins, cutting the deficit to one and briefly threatening a Marlins comeback. But the Angels held on, closing out the 4-3 victory despite Miami generating 12 hits compared to Los Angeles's six. On the offensive side, Kyle Stowers led all batters with a combined WPA of plus-32.3 percent and an RE24 of plus-2.8, his walk in the fourth off George Klassen and single in the sixth off Shaun Anderson both proving consequential in keeping Miami's half-innings alive. Schanuel finished second among hitters at plus-25.7 percent WPA. On the pitching side, George Klassen led Marlins relievers at plus-16.7 percent WPA, while Ben Joyce contributed plus-13.3 percent and Michael Petersen added plus-10.4 percent for the Angels' bullpen in preserving the narrow win.
