The Story
The New York Mets defeated the Kansas City Royals 7-3 at Citi Field on July 9, 2026, and the DiamondIQ model's estimate of the outcome shifted from a 56 percent pre-game home win probability all the way to 100 percent by the final out. The game was largely decided in a decisive bottom of the fifth inning against Michael Wacha, which saw New York score five runs and effectively put the contest out of reach. Carson Benge delivered the biggest single swing of the game, his fifth-inning single off Wacha adding 17.5 percent to the Mets' win probability, followed shortly by Tyrone Taylor's home run that pushed the needle an additional 13.1 percent. A.J. Ewing and Francisco Alvarez also contributed singles in that same frame, adding 7.5 and 6.6 percent respectively, as the inning collectively dismantled any path Kansas City had to victory.
The lone significant Kansas City response came in the top of the fourth, when Bobby Witt Jr. connected for a home run off Sean Manaea, a swing worth plus 11.3 percent in win probability for the Royals and the highest-leverage moment of the game for Kansas City. Despite that jolt, the Royals never threatened in a sustained way, finishing with three runs on seven hits and an error. Benge led all position players with a WPA of plus 17.4 percent and a RE24 of plus 2.1, while Taylor posted plus 12.1 percent WPA. On the pitching side, Sean Manaea led Mets starters with a WPA of plus 3.7 percent, supported by Huascar Brazobán at plus 1.9 and Lucas Erceg at plus 1.2 out of the bullpen, as New York's staff held Kansas City to a single run in seven of nine innings.
