The Story
The Chicago White Sox completed a 3-0 shutout of the Cleveland Guardians at Progressive Field on October 3, 2026, holding Cleveland scoreless across nine innings while the DiamondIQ model's estimate of a Cleveland win fell from 54 percent before first pitch all the way to zero by the final out.
The decisive blow came in the fourth inning when Munetaka Murakami drove a Parker Messick offering out of the park for a home run, swinging win probability 17.5 percent in Chicago's favor and staking the White Sox to a lead they would never relinquish. Cleveland had chances to answer but repeatedly came up empty in high-leverage spots, most notably when Brayan Rocchio lined out against Anthony Kay in the bottom of the fourth, a sequence that cost the Guardians 9.5 percent in win probability. Chase DeLauter's lineout off Bryan Hudson in the third had similarly bled 7.8 percent from Cleveland's chances before the game even reached its midpoint. Colson Montgomery extended the advantage in the seventh with a double off Erik Sabrowski that added another 11.7 percent to Chicago's winning probability, effectively closing out any remaining Cleveland hope.
On the mound, Grant Taylor led all pitchers with a WPA of plus-15.8 percent, and he received able support from Anthony Kay at plus-9.3 percent and Bryan Hudson at plus-7.8 percent as the trio combined to limit Cleveland to just three hits. Murakami finished as the game's top offensive performer by WPA at plus-13.5 percent alongside a RE24 of plus-1.1, with Montgomery matching that RE24 figure while posting plus-11.3 percent WPA of his own. Miguel Vargas contributed plus-7.7 percent WPA and a RE24 of plus-0.9 to round out a balanced White Sox offensive effort that needed only six hits to walk away with a clean shutout on the road.
