The Story
The Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks 7-4 on July 3, 2026, at Chase Field, with the decisive damage coming in extra innings as Milwaukee plated four runs in the top of the eleventh to pull away. The DiamondIQ model's estimate had Arizona entering the game with a 40 percent chance of winning at home, but that figure eroded steadily and reached zero percent by the final out. The Diamondbacks had briefly shown life in the bottom of the third, when Nolan Arenado laced a double off Kyle Harrison that shifted win probability 20.9 points in Arizona's favor, giving the home side a foothold they would ultimately be unable to protect.
The eleventh inning sealed Arizona's fate in decisive fashion. Jackson Chourio delivered a single off Ryan Thompson that swung win probability 32.9 points toward Milwaukee, the single largest momentum shift of the game. Joey Ortiz followed with a sacrifice bunt off Thompson that added another 13.5 points to Milwaukee's favor, methodically extending the lead. The Brewers had also threatened to blow things open earlier, but a double play off Chourio's bat in the top of the fourth, against Jonathan Loáisiga, cost Milwaukee 15.2 points of win probability and kept Arizona within reach into the late innings. A Cooper Pratt fielder's choice out in the eighth off Brandyn Garcia similarly stalled a potential Brewers rally, subtracting another 12.7 points from their chances.
On the mound, Chad Patrick was Milwaukee's most impactful arm, generating 23.2 points of win-probability value, while Jonathan Loáisiga contributed 21.5 points and Paul Sewald added 13.5 in what became a collaborative bullpen effort. Among position players, Jake Bauers led all batters with a WPA of plus 12.0 and a RE24 of plus 1.2, while Garrett Mitchell posted a RE24 of plus 1.4 to go with his plus 9.6 WPA. Arenado's plus 9.8 WPA and plus 1.0 RE24 represented Arizona's strongest individual showing, though it proved insufficient as Milwaukee's 12 hits to Arizona's nine, compounded by three Diamondbacks errors, ultimately told the story of a game that slipped away in extras.
