The Story
The San Francisco Giants walked off the Oakland Athletics 2-1 on June 24, 2026 at Oracle Park in a game that was scoreless through seven innings before erupting in dramatic fashion over the final two frames. The DiamondIQ model's estimate opened at a 48 percent home win probability and closed at 100 percent, a swing driven almost entirely by two back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the ninth that turned a 1-0 deficit into a Giants victory.
The Athletics broke the deadlock first when Max Muncy connected for a solo home run off Dylan Smith in the top of the eighth, a swing worth plus 21.3 percent in win probability that gave Oakland what appeared to be a decisive lead entering the final innings. San Francisco starter Tyler Mahle and reliever Luis Medina kept the Giants in it through the middle frames, with Mahle finishing as the top WPA pitcher at plus 25.4 percent. Medina was sharp as well, posting plus 23.3 percent WPA, highlighted by a key strikeout of Casey Schmitt in the bottom of the eighth that swung win probability 22.1 points in Oakland's favor and left the Giants facing their final three outs trailing by one.
Athletics reliever Elvis Alvarado could not close it out. Victor Bericoto led off the bottom of the ninth with a home run that shifted win probability by plus 45.9 percent, knotting the game at one, and Rafael Devers followed immediately with another solo shot worth plus 44.1 percent to end it. Bericoto finished as the game's top batter by WPA at plus 43.1 percent with a RE24 of plus 0.7, while Devers added plus 35.4 percent WPA. The Athletics finished with three hits and no errors; San Francisco needed six hits and absorbed one error but needed only two runs, both of them coming in the final at-bat of the game.
