The Story
The Texas Rangers held off the Detroit Tigers 5-4 at Comerica Park on May 1, 2026, completing a road victory that the DiamondIQ model's estimate rated as a 52 percent home-win proposition before first pitch. Texas broke the game open in the top of the third inning, when Danny Jansen hit a home run off Jack Flaherty that shifted win probability 9.8 percentage points in the Rangers' favor, capping a three-run frame that gave Texas a 4-0 lead through three. Detroit responded with a three-run fourth, getting back within a run on a Wenceel Pérez single off MacKenzie Gore that moved the Tigers' win probability 12.7 points in Detroit's favor, and then added another run in the fifth to pull even at four. Alejandro Osuna's double off Burch Smith in the top of the eighth, worth 12.1 percentage points, pushed Texas back in front 5-4 and proved to be the decisive blow.
The Rangers then turned to Jakob Junis to protect the lead, and he delivered the most consequential pitching performance of the night, finishing with plus-31.9 percentage points of win probability added. His biggest moment came through a Wenceel Pérez flyout in the bottom of the eighth that swung the win probability 16.5 points against Detroit, effectively stalling a potential rally. Jacob Latz then closed out the ninth, inducing a Kevin McGonigle groundout that, despite adding 31.6 points to Detroit's win probability from the batter's perspective, ended the game with Texas on top. McGonigle led all position players with a plus-23.0 percent WPA on the night, followed by Riley Greene at plus-10.9 and Jake Burger at plus-10.7, though none of their contributions were enough to overcome Texas's bullpen. Jalen Beeks and Brant Hurter also contributed positively for the Rangers, finishing with plus-8.7 and plus-8.3 percent WPA respectively as Texas secured the 5-4 final.
