The Story
The New York Yankees defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers 4-1 at Dodger Stadium on June 4, 2023, handing Los Angeles a loss despite the DiamondIQ model entering the game giving the home side a 53% win probability. The game was scoreless through six innings before the decisive moments arrived in a compressed back-and-forth stretch over the final three frames. In the bottom of the seventh, J.D. Martinez temporarily swung momentum toward the Dodgers with a home run off Domingo Germán that shifted win probability 18.5 points in Los Angeles's favor. New York answered quickly, however, as Giancarlo Stanton delivered a double off Evan Phillips in the top of the eighth worth 14.2 percentage points of win probability, and Anthony Volpe capped the scoring with a home run off Caleb Ferguson in the ninth that added another 13.0 percentage points. The Dodgers' two errors compounded their difficulties, and consecutive unsuccessful at-bats from Freddie Freeman, who grounded out against Wandy Peralta in the eighth at a cost of 12.9 percentage points, and Max Muncy, who flied out in the ninth at a cost of 7.7 points, extinguished any remaining chances.
Among individual performers, Bobby Miller led all pitchers by the DiamondIQ model's estimate of win-probability contribution at plus-27.7%, the strongest single-player mark of the game, though he absorbed the loss. Domingo Germán posted plus-17.6% on the mound for New York, and closer Clay Holmes contributed plus-14.5%. On the offensive side, Martinez finished as the top batter by cumulative WPA at plus-20.8% despite pitching for the losing team, while Volpe's line of plus-10.6% WPA and plus-1.6 RE24 made him New York's most productive offensive contributor by run-environment impact. Stanton added plus-9.5% WPA to round out the Yankees' key performers in a game that remained tightly contested into the late innings before New York pulled away with a clean defensive performance, committing zero errors against the Dodgers' two.
