The Story
The Cleveland Guardians defeated the Oakland Athletics 6-4 on April 5, 2023, at Oakland Coliseum, completing the comeback in extra innings after Oakland briefly seized control in the bottom of the eighth. The DiamondIQ model's estimate opened with Oakland holding a 54 percent win probability before first pitch, and Cleveland spent most of regulation unable to crack the scoreboard, finally breaking through in the sixth inning on a Cam Gallagher double off Domingo Acevedo that swung win probability 24.8 percent in Cleveland's favor. The Guardians added two more in the seventh on an Andrés Giménez single off Adrián Martinez, a hit that moved the needle another 14.1 percent toward Cleveland. Oakland answered emphatically in the bottom of the eighth when Jesús Aguilar hit a grand slam off Tim Herrin, a single swing that produced the largest win-probability movement of the game at plus-45.5 percent and gave Oakland a lead that pushed Cleveland's chances to the brink.
The Guardians recovered in the tenth inning to settle the outcome for good. Will Brennan's groundout in the top half drove in runs in a manner that shifted win probability 33.3 percent back toward Cleveland, extending the lead to 6-4, and Emmanuel Clase then closed out Oakland in the bottom frame. Aledmys Díaz's strikeout to end the game against Clase represented a minus-14.7 percent swing, the sharpest losing moment for the Athletics in the final inning. On the mound, Hunter Gaddis led all pitchers with a plus-31.4 percent WPA contribution, followed by Kyle Muller at plus-22.5 percent and Jeurys Familia at plus-13.5 percent, a trio that collectively preserved enough margin for Cleveland to survive Oakland's eighth-inning surge. Among position players, Aguilar finished as the top WPA performer at plus-55.1 percent despite his team ultimately falling, while Gallagher's plus-20.2 percent WPA and 1.8 RE24 made him one of Cleveland's most impactful contributors on the night.
