The Story
The Milwaukee Brewers held off the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-4 at PNC Park on September 16, 2026, completing the comeback on the road despite the DiamondIQ model entering the day giving the home side a 41 percent win probability. Milwaukee scored in four of nine innings, building its runs in clusters while Pittsburgh never managed to pull decisively ahead, leaving the door open for a Brewers squad that finished with ten hits against twelve for the Pirates.
The decisive moments came on both ends of the ninth inning. Brandon Lowe's home run off Logan Henderson in the bottom of the fifth was the single biggest offensive swing of the night for Pittsburgh, lifting the home team's win probability by 23.0 percentage points and tying or tightening the game at that stage. Milwaukee answered in the top of the seventh when Christian Yelich singled off Carmen Mlodzinski for a 17.3 percentage point swing in the Brewers' favor, and Milwaukee added two more runs that frame to take command. Pittsburgh threatened in the eighth, but Rafael Flores Jr. grounded into a double play off Abner Uribe, a 19.0 point swing against the Pirates, followed by Ronny Simon's groundout for another 16.5 point swing, effectively extinguishing the rally. Konnor Griffin's groundout to end the ninth off Trevor Megill sealed it with a 31.6 point swing, completing Milwaukee's win.
Among individuals, Abner Uribe was the game's most impactful performer by the DiamondIQ model's estimate, generating 31.9 percentage points of win probability added out of the bullpen, while Brandon Lowe led Pittsburgh hitters at plus 26.1 WPA with a RE24 of plus 1.7. Konnor Griffin finished at plus 27.5 WPA for the Pirates despite his game-ending groundout accounting for much of that swing in context, and Oneil Cruz contributed plus 16.7 WPA for Pittsburgh. Yohan Ramirez and Camilo Doval added 7.1 and 3.6 WPA respectively to close it out for Milwaukee.
