The Story
The Cleveland Guardians walked off the Chicago White Sox 7-6 on September 15, 2026, at Progressive Field, completing a dramatic comeback that swung the DiamondIQ model's estimate from a 54 percent pre-game home win probability all the way to 100 percent by the final out. Cleveland trailed entering the ninth and appeared in serious jeopardy, but Brayan Rocchio delivered the decisive blow, a walk-off double off Grant Taylor that shifted win probability by 78.8 percent in a single swing — the most consequential play of the game by a wide margin. The Guardians scored twice in the bottom of the ninth to secure the victory, capping a contest that had been defined by sharp momentum reversals across the late innings.
The middle innings told the story of both teams trading advantages. Chicago seized control in the top of the sixth when Miguel Vargas singled off Hunter Gaddis, a hit that added 24.8 percent in win probability and was part of a four-run frame that gave the White Sox a commanding lead. Travis Bazzana answered for Cleveland in the bottom half with a home run off Davis Martin, a swing worth 13.8 percent in win probability that kept the Guardians within reach. Chase Meidroth had also contributed for Chicago in the fifth, his double off Foster Griffin adding 12.7 percent in win probability. Bazzana's strikeout against Taylor in the bottom of the eighth, however, was a significant missed opportunity, costing Cleveland 12.9 percent in win probability before the ninth-inning rally ultimately rendered it moot.
Among the night's top performers by DiamondIQ metrics, Rocchio led all batters with a 79.5 percent WPA and a RE24 of plus-1.9, his late heroics placing him well clear of the field. Vargas finished second among position players at plus-22.8 percent WPA and plus-1.3 RE24, while Meidroth matched that RE24 figure with an 18.1 percent WPA contribution. On the mound, Erik Sabrowski paced Cleveland's pitching staff at plus-12.7 percent WPA, with Bryan Hudson and Cade Smith adding 9.7 and 7.9 percent respectively as the bullpen held Chicago scoreless over the final three innings to set the stage for Rocchio's winning hit.
