The Story
The Detroit Tigers defeated the Chicago White Sox 4-1 at Comerica Park on June 20, 2026, a game in which the DiamondIQ model's estimate opened at 44 percent in favor of Detroit and closed at 100 percent. Chicago grabbed the game's only early lead with a run in the top of the first, but Detroit's pitching staff, anchored by Troy Melton, gradually suffocated the White Sox offense and allowed the Tigers' lineup to chip away and ultimately pull away over the middle innings.
The game's decisive stretch arrived in the fifth and sixth innings, with White Sox starter Joe Rock at the center of the damage. Dillon Dingler's single in the bottom of the fifth was the turning point, adding 10.5 percent in win probability and knotting the contest before Detroit took the lead. Jake Rogers followed with a single in the sixth worth 10.3 percent, and James Outman extended the rally with an 8.9-percent swing of his own, both off Rock, pushing Detroit ahead and effectively sealing the outcome. A strikeout of Jahmai Jones in the bottom of the fourth had briefly swung momentum back toward Chicago at negative 9.4 percent, suggesting Rock briefly held the Tigers in check before the dam broke. Dingler then put the finishing touches on the victory with a solo home run off Trevor Richards in the seventh, a swing worth an additional 7.4 percent.
Dingler was Detroit's most impactful offensive performer, finishing with a combined WPA of plus-13.4 percent and an RE24 of plus-1.3. Sam Antonacci contributed plus-9.9 percent in win probability with a team-leading RE24 of plus-1.9, and Outman added plus-8.6 percent. On the mound, Troy Melton was the game's single most valuable player by far, posting a WPA of plus-25.3 percent, with Sean Newcomb and Tyler Holton each adding double-digit contributions out of the bullpen to close it out.
