The Story
The Athletics handled the Los Angeles Angels with ease on June 18, 2026, at Sutter Health Park, winning 5-0 on a five-run first inning that effectively ended the contest before it began. The DiamondIQ model entered the game favoring Oakland at 64% and finished at 100% after the Athletics scored all five of their runs in the opening frame. Los Angeles managed four hits and committed one error across nine innings but never threatened, finishing with a shutout loss in which the Angels left Ryan Johnson and the Oakland lineup largely unscathed after that decisive first.
The biggest momentum swing of the game came in the top of the second, when Christian Moore struck out against Gage Jump in a plate appearance that shifted win probability 7.4 points against the Angels. Moore struck out again against Jump in the fourth, costing Los Angeles another 3.3 points of win probability, underscoring how thoroughly Jump neutralized a hitter who represented one of the Angels' better chances to generate offense. On the other side, Jacob Wilson's lineout in the bottom of the second actually registered as a positive 6.6-point swing for Oakland in the context of base-out state management, and Nick Kurtz contributed a flyout in the first that added 6.0 points to the Athletics' win probability as the inning's damage was being done.
Gage Jump was the clear standout of the evening, posting a 17.0% WPA that reflected a dominant outing on the mound. Offensively, Kurtz led all position players with a cumulative 8.1% WPA, followed by Wilson at 6.7%. Shea Langeliers added a home run off Ryan Johnson in the first inning, a blow worth 3.2 points of win probability that helped set the tone for a lopsided afternoon in Sacramento.
