The Story
The Atlanta Braves cruised to a 9-4 victory over the Washington Nationals at Nationals Park on April 20, 2026, a result the DiamondIQ model's estimate foreshadowed early, as Washington's pre-game win probability of 28 percent ultimately collapsed to zero. Atlanta was largely dormant through three innings before Matt Olson cracked a home run off Jake Irvin in the top of the fourth, a swing that shifted win probability 18.5 points in Atlanta's favor and represented the game's single most consequential play. Washington responded briefly when Daylen Lile went deep off Bryce Elder in the bottom of the fourth, a blow worth 11.4 percentage points for the Nationals, but that proved to be Washington's last moment of genuine leverage in the contest.
The Braves effectively closed the door in the top of the sixth with a five-run outburst against the Washington bullpen. Drake Baldwin's double off PJ Poulin was the engine of that rally, generating a 14.2-point win-probability swing, and Michael Harris II contributed a single off Brad Lord worth another 11.4 points, partially offsetting the damage Harris had done to his own team with an 11.9-point negative swing on a groundout in the second. Atlanta added two more in the ninth to finalize the 9-4 margin, with the Braves finishing with seven hits against Washington's three and benefiting from three Nationals errors. Olson finished as the game's top performer by WPA at plus-17.6, supported by a RE24 of plus-1.7, while Baldwin posted plus-9.9 WPA and plus-1.3 RE24. On the mound, Tyler Kinley led Atlanta's relievers with a plus-5.2 WPA mark, and Irvin contributed plus-2.8 despite surrendering the Olson home run earlier in his outing.
