The Story
The New York Yankees defeated the Detroit Tigers 4-3 on September 6, 2023, at Yankee Stadium, holding on after a late Detroit push to close out a game the DiamondIQ model had favored from the start, with a pre-game home win probability of 59% that ultimately reached 100% by the final out.
The decisive sequence came in the third inning, when the Yankees built their cushion against Tigers starter Beau Brieske. Jasson Domínguez connected on a home run that shifted win probability 10.6 points in New York's favor, and Oswald Peraza followed with a double worth an additional 9.3 points, the two plays together forming the offensive backbone of the Yankees' winning effort. Detroit did not fold quietly, however. In the seventh, Andy Ibáñez singled off Clarke Schmidt to push the Tigers closer, a hit worth 13.6 percentage points of win probability. The Tigers carried that momentum into the eighth, where Kerry Carpenter drew a walk off Wandy Peralta to extend the threat, but Matt Vierling's strikeout against Greg Weissert proved to be the kill shot, swinging win probability 17.0 points back toward New York and effectively ending Detroit's comeback bid.
On the individual side, Domínguez led all position players with a WPA of plus-14.5 and an RE24 of plus-1.5, while Peraza contributed plus-12.2 WPA and plus-1.3 RE24 to round out a productive night for New York's younger contributors. Aaron Judge added plus-8.6 WPA to the cause. On the mound, Weissert was the model's top-rated pitcher at plus-17.0 WPA, with Clay Holmes close behind at plus-15.2, the two relievers doing the work necessary to protect a lead that New York never fully relinquished after the third inning.
