The Story
The New York Yankees handled the Detroit Tigers 5-1 at Yankee Stadium on September 5, 2023, with the DiamondIQ model's estimate of a New York win moving from a 58% pre-game probability all the way to 100% by the final out. The game was largely a pitcher's duel through five innings before a pivotal sixth frame decided matters. Detroit briefly applied pressure when Kerry Carpenter lashed a triple off Gerrit Cole in the top of the sixth, a play that shifted win probability by +11.8% in the Tigers' favor, and Miguel Cabrera followed with a single to drive him in, adding another +6.8% swing. That single run, however, proved to be Detroit's only scoring of the night.
New York answered immediately and emphatically in the bottom of the sixth. Giancarlo Stanton connected on a home run off José Cisnero that registered a +26.2% win-probability swing, the single most decisive play of the game and the moment that effectively ended Detroit's competitive window. The Yankees added two more runs in the eighth to salt the game away. Stanton finished as the top batter by WPA at +24.0% with a +1.2 RE24, while Aaron Judge contributed a +8.1% WPA and led all hitters with a +1.4 RE24. Carpenter's +6.6% WPA represented the lone bright spot in the Detroit lineup.
On the mound, Gerrit Cole led all pitchers with a +14.4% WPA despite surrendering the Carpenter triple and Cabrera single in the sixth. He navigated the threat and kept Detroit off the board otherwise, receiving strong relief support from Jonathan Loáisiga at +8.1% WPA and Tommy Kahnle at +7.2% WPA. Detroit's pitching staff could not match the effort, and despite out-hitting the Yankees nine to six, the Tigers were unable to convert their opportunities into runs beyond that single sixth-inning tally.
