The Story
The Chicago Cubs defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 10-6 on June 14, 2023 at Wrigley Field, with the DiamondIQ model's estimate of a Chicago win climbing from a pre-game 47% all the way to 100% by the final out. Pittsburgh actually drew first blood in a big way, plating three runs in the top of the first inning, but the Cubs methodically clawed back and then delivered the knockout blow in a six-run sixth inning that turned a close game into a comfortable victory.
That bottom of the sixth was the defining sequence of the afternoon. Ian Happ's single off Yohan Ramírez was the single most impactful play of the game, shifting win probability by plus 23.0 percentage points in Chicago's favor. Dansby Swanson followed with another single off Ramírez worth plus 10.1 points, while Pirates reliever Roansy Contreras was unable to stop the bleeding, surrendering a single to Mike Tauchman that added 13.5 points and walks to both Nick Madrigal and Yan Gomes worth 10.7 and 10.2 points respectively. Chicago then tacked on three more in the eighth to finish the scoring at 10-6.
On the individual ledger, Happ finished as the game's top batter by WPA at plus 19.5 percentage points alongside a RE24 of plus 0.5, while Swanson contributed plus 14.5 WPA and the game's best RE24 among position players at plus 2.3. Madrigal rounded out the top three offensive contributors at plus 11.0 WPA. On the mound, Osvaldo Bido was Chicago's most valuable arm with a plus 20.2 WPA, followed by Mark Leiter Jr. at plus 10.8, as the Cubs pitching staff ultimately contained a Pittsburgh lineup that had managed 12 hits on the day.
