The Story
The New York Yankees shut out the Chicago White Sox 3-0 on June 7, 2023, at Yankee Stadium, moving the DiamondIQ model's pre-game home win probability of 67 percent all the way to 100 percent by game's end. Chicago managed just two hits on the night, never threatening in a contest that was decided almost entirely by what happened in the fourth and fifth innings.
The decisive sequence began in the bottom of the fourth, when Gleyber Torres delivered a home run off Mike Clevinger that swung win probability 14.5 percent in New York's favor, the single largest play of the game. Later in that same inning, Willie Calhoun added a double off Clevinger for an additional 6.8 percent swing, further tightening New York's grip. The Yankees extended their lead in the fifth when Billy McKinney hit a home run, also off Clevinger, pushing the win probability another 8.1 percent toward New York. Clevinger absorbed the damage across all three of those pivotal moments, and the White Sox never found an answer on the offensive side.
Among the top performers by the DiamondIQ model's estimates, Torres led all batters with a net WPA of plus 12.6 percent alongside a RE24 of plus 0.7, while McKinney posted plus 5.6 percent WPA and a RE24 of plus 0.8. On the pitching side, Ron Marinaccio led New York's bullpen with a WPA of plus 14.0 percent, followed closely by Randy Vasquez at plus 13.6 percent. Aaron Bummer contributed a modest plus 2.6 percent WPA for the White Sox in a losing effort. New York's pitching staff combined to hold Chicago to a pair of hits, completing a dominant performance from the mound.
