The Story
The Miami Marlins overcame a late Angels surge to defeat Los Angeles 8-5 at Angel Stadium on May 27, 2023, with the DiamondIQ model's estimate of a home win probability opening at 56% and falling all the way to 0% by the final out. The game turned decisively in extra innings, when a field error charged to Jaime Barria on a Garrett Cooper plate appearance in the top of the tenth swung win probability by 41.7%, the single largest shift of the night and the play that effectively broke the game open. Miami tacked on further in the frame with a Garrett Hampson single off Barria that added another 12.7%, as the Marlins plated four runs in the tenth to seize control. The Angels had kept themselves in contention with a Matt Thaiss single off Matt Barnes in the bottom of the sixth that moved the needle 24.3% in their favor, and a Gio Urshela home run off Steven Okert in the eighth that added 21.9%, but those rallies ultimately fell short.
Jorge Soler had given Miami a critical cushion before that, connecting on a home run off Chase Silseth in the seventh inning for a 27.6% win-probability swing. Among position players, Cooper led all batters with a combined WPA of plus 41.7% and an RE24 of plus 1.4, while Urshela finished at plus 25.6% WPA and a game-best plus 2.7 RE24 despite being on the losing side. Brandon Drury also contributed meaningfully at plus 25.4% WPA and plus 0.8 RE24 for Miami. On the mound, Edward Cabrera paced all pitchers with a plus 18.8% WPA, supported by Chris Devenski at plus 17.2% and Carlos Estévez at plus 13.5%, as the Marlins bullpen held firm through the Angels' late pushes to secure the road victory.
